Granted they spend more on labor but it's the one step that you can't skip unfortunately, just like mic bearings etc TDC is simple, roughly turn crank to #1TDC (all timing marks line-up), set wheel to 0, turn crank 20 degree clockwise, install piston stop. Keep turning clockwise until piston touches piston stop again. Find out what degree it is. Ex. @ 30 degree. So (20+30)/2 = 25 = midpoint. Now rotate degree wheel (not the crank) 5 degree counterclock wise (20 + 5 = 25). That's your TDC at 0 degree.
